First Meeting of the Mentoring Council 2026-27

The Mentoring Council meeting of the B.Com. Program was held on July 25, 2026, in the Meeting Room from 10.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., with the participation of four industry professionals and alumni —Mr. Suhas Mallya, Mr. Rayees Iftie, Mr. Ashwin Kamat, and CA Manjunath Hegde—and B.Com. faculty members, with the objective of advancing student development and enhancing the quality of commerce education.

At the outset, Dr. Lina Sadekar, B.Com Coordinator, presented the outcomes and progress of the previous Mentoring Council meeting held on 7th February 2026. Following a review of the progress made, discussions focused on enhancing employability and industry engagement through professional LinkedIn profiles, alumni networking, structured internships, and employer-aligned practical assignments.

To meet evolving industry demands, the council emphasized strengthening practical exposure to Business Analytics for undergraduate students, providing Tally training, and reinforcing basic accounting through innovative bridge courses for students from non-accounting backgrounds.

The council also underscored the importance of nurturing entrepreneurial thinking, fostering ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) through specialized workshops and guidelines, and providing continuous communication coaching. Proposed student-centric activities included revitalizing the Commerce Club, conducting regular newspaper analysis sessions, organizing educational field visits, and arranging expert sessions with industry professionals.

Looking ahead, the Department highlighted several upcoming milestones, including Commerce Day scheduled for August 3, 2026, and a Faculty Development Program scheduled for October 6, 2026. The activities and initiatives planned by all departments for the Academic Year 2026–27 were also discussed and deliberated upon during the meeting. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to implementing the proposed initiatives to promote academic excellence, enhance employability, strengthen industry-academia engagement, and support the holistic development of students.

Expected Outcome of the Activity:

  1. Improved Employability of Students: Enhanced job readiness through structured internships, Tally training, and practical exposure to Business Analytics.
  2. Stronger Industry and Alumni Networks: Improved industry visibility and opportunities for direct mentorship through active LinkedIn engagement, alumni networking, and industry-led sessions.
  3. Ethical Technology Use and Foundational Learning: Promotion of responsible and mindful use of AI, along with accounting bridge courses to support students from non-commerce and non-accounting backgrounds.

4. Holistic Student Growth: Development of communication skills, real-world awareness, entrepreneurial thinking, and practical knowledge through field visits, newspaper analysis, Commerce Club activities, and expert interactions.
