The IT (Information Technology) industry is growing by leaps and bounds globally and in India as well, resulting in an ever-increasing growth in the demand for computing professionals. The College showed tremendous foresight by pioneering the Bachelor of Computer Applications Programme – BCA – in Goa as far back as 1997. This was probably the first non-professional general education programme in the State which was not part of the regular and routine BA, B.Sc. and B.Com programmes. The programme caught on quickly and is offered today in about 10 colleges all over the State.
Employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in the sector are huge, and this has resulted in more students taking up undergraduate programmes in the field. Many experts in the industry consider the BCA programme to be one of the best options for students who do not wish to pursue an Engineering degree, yet are desirous of learning different aspects of computer applications in order to craft a successful career for themselves in the IT sector.
The BCA programme of Goa University has been designed with a sound blend of theory, practical and skill components. In 2021-22, the Department of Computer Science which runs the programme, adopted Outcome-Based teaching methodology where all aspects of learning are focused upon achieving the course and programme outcomes. This has now become an integral part of the functioning of the Department. Students are continuously engaged in innovative teaching learning pedagogies and the College provides a strong base of Industry-Academia-Alumni Connect to make every student industry-ready.
The programme provides a focused curriculum for students who wish to pursue careers in IT and related areas. To supplement the curriculum, the Department conducts focussed workshops and seminars on emerging areas, guest lectures and interactions with industry experts, sends students for internships and offers a range of add-on courses. All these efforts are targeted towards preparing students for career opportunities in sectors like IT, IT enabled services, Application Development, Computer Networking, Banking etc. in the job profiles of Software Developer, UI/UX Developer, Digital Marketing Professionals, Data Science, etc.
Students also participate wholeheartedly in extra-curricular activities such as sports, dance, music, poetry, art and craft, and other activities organized by the various Clubs and Councils of the College. These allow the students to develop interests and hone their talents in areas other than their core academic field.
With the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from the academic year 2023-24, the BCA programme has been redesigned yet again to fit the structure followed by all UG programmes of Goa University. Every student will get exposure to courses from the discipline of Computer Applications & Programming & Computer Science as their Major, exposure in Mathematics & Statistics as their Minor course, and will also get an opportunity to learn various Multidisciplinary, Common Value Added, Skill Enhancement & Ability Enhancement Courses.
