National Service Scheme (NSS)

About National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides an opportunity to the student youth in colleges to take part in various government-led community service activities & programmes. The main aim of the NSS is to provide hands-on experience to young students in delivering community service.

Motto

The motto of National Service Scheme is NOT ME BUT YOU

Benefits of Being a NSS Volunteer:

A NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would gain the exposure and experience to be:

  • an accomplished social leader
  • an efficient administrator
  • a person with empathy towards people less fortunate than him/her
  • a responsible citizen

The NSS Unit of the College has a strength of 426 volunteers in the academic year 2019-20 and is well-known for conducting meaningful outreach and extension activities. Guided by the four Programme Officers, the volunteers work in the interest of the community and conduct various activities that help different sections of the society –children in orphanages, inmates of old age homes, villagers and young children working in and around the Margao Market.

Several NSS Volunteers successfully completed the 100 hours Swachh Bharat Summer Internship in the year 2018-19. Mr. Amitesh Shirwaikar, Block Development Officer, Salcete and Mrs. Ranjita Pai, Former President and an active member Mahila Mandal, Margao are members of the NSS Advisory Committee and are guiding and supporting the NSS Unit in conducting activities.

The activities conducted this year include(2020-21):

The College has 6 NSS Units, with an allotted strength of 550 volunteers. The NSS volunteers are involved in activities such as Swaccha Bharat Abhiyaan, Blood donation, creating awareness about AIDS and malaria, teaching less privileged children and several such activities.

The College has had the distinction of having six NSS volunteers represent Goa at the Republic Day parade at New Delhi. Mr. Prem Kumar Singh of SY B.Com participated in the Republic Day parade at New Delhi in January 2020.

Two students have also won the Indira Gandhi National Award for Best NSS volunteer, given every year to 16 NSS volunteers from all over the country. This is the only College in Goa to have won this prestigious award twice. Two NSS volunteers have also been part of the Indian youth contingents that visited China and South Korea.

In the summer of 2018, 61 students completed Swaccha Bharat Summer Internship launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, wherein they completed 100 hours of community service related to cleanliness, waste management, hygiene, etc. in villages of South Goa. The students gained immensely from this experience. During 2020-21, despite the pandemic, two groups of students participated in this project – now called the Swaccha Bharat Student Internship. Our volunteers regularly visit the Old Age Home at Margao, managed by Provedoria and spent time with the inmates, playing games, singing, reading to them etc.

During the lockdown, our volunteers rose to the occasion – they stitched and distributed free masks in their neighbourhoods, and volunteered their time (about 8 hours every day) at the OPD of Hospicio, Margao. They also designed posters and banners to create awareness about the disease and precautions to be taken and spread the message about the Aarogya Setu app.

In addition to the above, the NSS Unit organizes all other activities as notified by NSS Cell, Goa University, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, and other Departments from time to time which include observing Days of National Importance, Birth Anniversaries of Famous Personalities and Freedom fighters among others.
