Faculty attended Workshop for Research Aspirants

Two faculty members from the Department of Computer Science, Ms. Akshada Hegde and Mrs. Sweta P. Shet Verenkar attended a Workshop for Research Aspirants organized by S. S. Dempo College. The Resource Person Dr. Manish Ratnakar Joshi highlighted the process of research and guided the research aspirants.

Session One began with a group activity, where each group had to put forth their thoughts and ideas on a four quadrant chart, mentioning, Why one needs to do research, When one needs to complete doing research, Where is the research going to be applied? And, what do the participants expect to gain from this workshop?

Each group presented their ideas, which were pictorially depicted and Dr. Joshi gave his inputs about the do’s and don’ts while doing any research.

In the Second session, Dr. Joshi mentioned about the importance of creating a master keyword list, reading research papers of your area of interest and more importantly visualizing your research and progress in your area of interest.

Dr. Joshi provided many tools and website references for various domains namely ACM, CCS, Springer and Open Access journals. Dr. Joshi provided inputs on reading archives through arxiv.org for greater depth of knowledge in your area.

The best website suggested by Dr. Joshi for visualizing your research area is through Knowledge maps, available at openknowledgemaps.org, wherein every participant did hands-on training in finding knowledge maps for their area of interest.

Session Three comprised of an online quiz on Session 1 and 2 designed on kahoot.in. Every participant enthusiastically participated by logging into Kahoot. Further, in this session, the various steps of research were briefly explained which consisted of finalizing a research area, identifying and formulating a research problem, choosing your approach, gathering / analysing relevant data / experiments, evaluation and comparison with standards and at the end concluding your work with references.

Session Four was Introduction to the Latex Documentation Tool used for editing and managing research paper writing, comprising of the various tags to be used for ease of editing the document in APA Style, IEEE format etc.

Further the participants were provided with references of online documentation tools available on overleaf and tutorials point websites. The session ended with distribution of certificates to all the participants.
